The Eighth-highest peak in the world, Manasulu (Nepali: also known as Kutang) stands at 8,163 meters (26,781 ft) above sea level. It is located in Nepal's western-central Mansiri Himal region, in the country's Nepalese Himalayas. Named after the Sanskrit word Manasa which means "intellect" or "soul," Manasulu translates as "mountain of the spirit" in English. Toshio Imanishi and Gyalzen Norbu, members of a Japanese expedition, became the first to summit Manaslu on May 9, 1956. Manaslu has long been considered a Japanese mountain because of several British efforts to conquer Everest prior to Edmund Hilary's triumph.
